The average pair of sneakers lasts 6 months with regular exercise, the average sandal for 12 months. Multiple that by the number of years you've dressed your feet, and multiple that by the number of people on the planet, and you start to get an idea of how many shoes are being discarded into landfills or our waterways.
Unfortunately, most of our shoes are made from plastic with rubber soles. The sweat shops making such sneakers have long been reported on - underpaying staff at deplorable wages, and moving countries when questions were asked. Fortunately, it is now much easier to find footwear that is both stylish and eco-friendly.
Demand drives innovation, so we are now seeing shoes available in natural fibres using recycled rubber, using recycled ocean plastic (even plastic bottles) and made from discarded farm waste (like corn husks!).
Many of our suppliers use 100% recycled products, so when you are done you can send your shoes back to have them re-crafted into something new.
