Our Story

Unashamedly obsessed by Matcha Green Tea from our many trips to Japan, our mission is to help others enjoy the many health benefits of regularly drinking superior tasting Japanese Matcha Green Tea while looking after our Environment via Eco-friendly home compostable packaging.

Matcha Yu Tea are delighted to bring to you 2022 Golden Leaf Award Winning Organic Matcha sourced from the tea fields of Kyushu, Japan.

On the environmental front, owner Erin does all that she can in my daily life to minimise waste and only positively impact our Mother Earth so naturally she wants to give my customers the same opportunity. This is why we offer all of our teas in home compostable packaging.

Erin is an active volunteer, participating in regular beach clean-ups and work with local environmental groups and government to create change that benefit the environment. So needless to say, she is very passionate about reducing waste and running an eco friendly business with plastic free packaging and delivery.

- What does Erin at Matcha Yu Tea do?

I head up Matcha Yu Tea and I do the lot! From packing tea, placing orders with Japan, packing customer orders, doing social media, running ads, sending out newsletters, keeping the website updated, looking for wholesale opportunities, doing market stalls and so on, it’s never a dull moment!

- Why did I start Matcha Yu Tea?

To share my love of Japanese culture as well as the joy and benefits I receive by drinking delicious Matcha Green Tea with others! I also love offering people an eco-friendly option with our fully home compostable tea packaging and plastic-free delivery.

- What makes our products unique or special?

We have Multi Award Winning Matcha on offer. We feel it’s our duty to ensure others have a positive delicious experience drinking Matcha Green Tea. We also offer our tea in eco-friendly packaging which is something not readily available for Matcha currently both in Australia and around the world. I feel it is my responsibility as a business owner to offer eco options to help protect the earth from the excessive amounts of plastic packaging already out there. I don’t add any more, instead providing compostable packaging that can be broken down in a home compost.

    • Are your products manufactured or sourced based on their minimal harmful impact to society, which translates to no child labour, no exploitation, fair wages for workers, social security payments, safe working place and fair-trade?

    3. Manufacturing Process

    • Are your products manufactured or sourced based on their minimal harmful impact to our environment, which translates to being made of natural and organic material (i.e. bamboo, organic cotton), therefore zero waste, or fully recyclable at the end of their long life (i.e. stainless steel)?
    • Is your production chain transparent, i.e. you know where your raw materials come from, how they are being produced and that your providers follow ethical and sustainable production practices and policies?

    4. Product Ingredients

    • Are your products free of toxic chemicals, toxic metals and pesticides (i.e. BPA, Synthetic fragrances, Microbeads, Parabens, Oxybenzone, Formaldehyde)?
    • Are all of our products free of palm oil and its derivatives, also free of responsibly sourced palm oil (RSPO)? At I’M PLASTIC FREE we believe that unfortunately you cannot fill a bucket of water from multiple taps, then try and separate the water showing which tap that water portion has come from. We want to fully fight deforestation as a way to preserve wildlife and minimise global warming.
    • Are your product cruelty-free, i.e. not tested on animals?
    • Are your products vegan?

    5. Product Materials

    • Are your products free of virgin plastic themselves or in some cases have a minimal amount of plastic (i.e. a plastic pump in a cosmetic glass / aluminium bottle < 20%)?
    • Are your products manufactured with recycled / upcycled materials, including recycled plastic, in order to divert them from landfill (i.e. swimwear from recycled fibres)?

    • Do your products follow a close-loop system, typical of the zero waste / circular economy, by which customers might be asked to send back empty packaging to be refilled with new product (i.e. recycling cleaning products’ containers etc)?
