The Spark & Origin Story Behind JazzUpCo

1. Every great business begins with a moment of profound realization. What was the exact ‘spark’, personal experience or “aha moment” that made you realize JazzUpCo needed to exist?

That spark happened while Rachael and I were renovating our first home. Like many couples, we were excited to fill our space with pieces we’d enjoy using every day and that would make our home feel like our own.

But, as we started shopping, we kept running into the same problem. So many homeware products like flatware were either poorly made or overly expensive. We couldn’t find pieces that were timeless in design, accessible, and built to last.

Eventually, we realized we probably weren’t the only ones looking for that balance, so we decided to create it ourselves. That became the foundation of JazzUpCo, and six years later, that mission still guides everything we do.

2. Your products are inspired by an elegant and minimalist style. How did this aesthetic come to shape the identity of your brand, and why was combining timeless designs with sustainability so important to you?

When Rachael and I started JazzUpCo, we noticed that many homeware brands were built around trends. They looked great at the time, but a few years later they often felt dated. We wanted to take a different approach, creating designs that complement any home and become pieces people genuinely enjoy using every day.

That naturally ties into our philosophy on sustainability. That means designing pieces that are timeless enough to never feel outdated, while using the highest-quality, most durable materials so they continue performing beautifully for years to come. When a product lasts in both style and quality, it reduces unnecessary waste and becomes something people can truly enjoy every day.

That commitment goes beyond our products. We’ve also worked to eliminate plastic from our packaging, use more sustainable materials wherever possible, and keep our packaging compact to reduce our carbon footprint. For us, sustainability is a mindset that influences every decision we make, from design and materials to the way each order is delivered.

3. Transitioning from an idea to launching a physical product line is incredibly challenging. What was the biggest hurdle you faced in the earliest days of JazzUpCo, and how did you overcome it?

For us, the biggest challenge was turning an idea into a product that didn’t already exist.

When we started, we noticed that most flatware fell into one of two extremes. It was either thin and flimsy or so thick that it felt bulky and uncomfortable to use. We wanted to create something that felt substantial and premium, while still being comfortable enough for everyday dining.

That vision eventually became our first hero product, the Ava Flatware. I After listening to feedback from the first 20,000+ customers Rachael and I personally served before hiring our first team member, we designed a unique hybrid handle that’s flat on the top and gently rounded underneath. It gives the flatware a balanced, weighted feel without sacrificing comfort.

But designing it was only one challenge. Finding a factory willing to bring that vision to life was another. Many factories prefer established designs with proven production methods, so we heard “no” more than a few times before finding a partner who believed in the product as much as we did.

Even then, bringing Ava to life wasn’t simple. Its unique design required a far more involved manufacturing process than traditional flatware, with more than 40 production steps from start to finish. It took us nearly two years and countless rounds of prototyping and refinement before we were finally happy with the result.

What you see today is actually Ava Version 3 – a product shaped by persistence, customer feedback, and an unwavering commitment to getting every detail right.

The Solution: Non-toxic Flatware Built for Longevity

4. Many consumers don’t think about what their utensils are made of until they experience flatware that bends or rusts. Your products feature a heavy, balanced, 18/10 stainless steel construction. Why is durability an essential pillar of a sustainable lifestyle?

We believe durability is one of the most overlooked aspects of sustainability. The most sustainable product is the one you don’t need to replace.

That’s why we chose 18/10 stainless steel, widely regarded as the gold standard for premium flatware. It’s highly resistant to rust and corrosion while giving our cutlery the substantial, balanced feel people associate with quality.

Combined with our titanium-alloy PVD coating, our flatware is designed to withstand years of everyday use without compromising on style or performance.

5. At I’m Plastic Free, we deeply care about eliminating toxins from the kitchen. Your flatware utilizes a specialized, non-toxic titanium-alloy PVD coating that locks in color without peeling. Can you explain the science and safety benefits behind this choice for families?

From the beginning, we wanted to create colored flatware that families could use every day without worrying about how it would hold up over time. One of the biggest frustrations with colored flatware is that lower-quality finishes can fade, scratch, or even peel after repeated use and washing.

That’s what led us to innovate and create the titanium-alloy PVD coating. While many premium flatware brands already use titanium PVD, we wanted to go a step further. Over the years, we’ve developed our own titanium-alloy PVD coating, combining titanium with other carefully selected metals to create an even more durable, wear-resistant finish.

We also take a different approach with the manufacturing process itself. While similar colours can be achieved in just 15–20 minutes, every piece of our flatware spends over 90 minutes in the PVD chamber. That extended process allows the coating to bond more completely with the stainless steel, creating a richer finish that’s far more resistant to fading, scratching, and everyday wear.

For us, it’s about making flatware that’s not only beautiful, but also safe, durable, and made to be enjoyed for years to come.

6. The word ‘sustainability’ can mean different things to different brands. When you say JazzUpCo is ‘non-toxic,’ what strict standards do you hold your supply chain and manufacturing to?

We hold our products to recognised international food safety standards.

Our products are independently tested by SGS, one of the world’s leading testing and certification companies headquartered in Switzerland, to ensure it meets both U.S. FDA and European food-contact standards.

That testing gives us confidence that our products are safe for everyday use. It verifies they meet strict standards for food-contact safety, including limits for heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury.

We apply that same level of care throughout our manufacturing process. We carefully source our materials, partner with manufacturers we trust, and produce our products in amfori BSCI-certified facilities, a globally recognized standard for responsible manufacturing and ethical business practices.

At the end of the day, these are the same products Rachael and I use in our own home. We built JazzUpCo to create pieces we’d be proud to put on our own table, and we hope our customers enjoy using them just as much as we do.

7. We live in a world heavily saturated with cheap, disposable, or short-lived plastic goods. How does JazzUpCo actively work to shift consumer mindsets away from ‘throwaway culture’ toward ‘buy-it-for-life’ home goods?

We believe the best way to move away from throwaway culture is to create products that people have no desire or need to replace.

That’s why we focus on timeless designs, premium materials like 18/10 stainless steel, and quality craftsmanship that stands the test of time. When something is beautiful and lasts for years, people naturally keep it longer.

For us, sustainability starts with creating homeware that’s made to be loved and used every day, without needing a replacement.

8. What is your absolute favorite piece from your current JazzUpCo dinnerware or flatware collections and why?

That’s a tough one, but if I had to pick just one, it would be our Ava Flatware Collection.

To me, it best represents what JazzUpCo stands for – timeless design, a substantial feel, and quality that’s made to last. It’s also the collection we’ve spent years refining, listening to customer feedback and continuously improving every little detail.

9. What is one everyday plastic item in the home you wish everyone would swap out immediately?

If I had to pick one, it would be plastic tableware – things like plastic cutlery, plates, and bowls.

They’re often used for just one meal but can remain in landfill for years. Switching to well-made, reusable tableware is one of the simplest changes you can make. Not only is it better in the long run, but it also makes everyday meals feel that little bit more special.

10. With over 100,000 customers already upgrading their tables with your collections, what is your ultimate long-term vision for the brand? Are there any new plastic-free home solutions on the horizon that you can tease for our audience?

Our vision has always been much bigger than flatware. We want JazzUpCo to become one of the world’s leading home and kitchen brands, creating beautiful, thoughtfully designed products that people genuinely love using every day.

Over the next few years, you’ll see us expanding into many more home and kitchen collections, all guided by the same philosophy of timeless design, exceptional quality, and products made to be enjoyed for years.

We have some exciting launches in the pipeline, and we can’t wait to share them with everyone soon.

Closing Thoughts

Investing in high-quality, plastic-free alternatives for your home is more than an aesthetic upgrade – it’s an investment in your family’s health and in products made to last. As Lawrence shared, true sustainability isn’t about buying more; it’s about buying better, one intentional choice at a time.

After speaking with the founders, one thing is clear: JazzUpCo is setting a new standard for non-toxic homeware. Their unwavering commitment to craftsmanship is proof that quality never goes out of style. With timeless designs and thoughtfully crafted collections, it’s easy to see why JazzUpCo is becoming the go-to brand for premium homeware.

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Lawrence and Rachael for sharing the story, vision, and craftsmanship behind JazzUpCo.
