International Plastic Free Day occurs yearly on May 25th and it is a global initiative by an organisation called “Free The Ocean” aimed at raising awareness about the pervasive use of plastic in our daily lives and encouraging individuals to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics. This initiative is also a call to action and a committment not to use any single-use plastic and say no to plastic, at least for a day.
What is the Purpose of International Plastic Free Day?
Plastic pollution is a significant environmental issue, with over 450 million tons of plastic produced each year, half of which is single-use. Only about 9% of all plastic gets recycled, leading to widespread pollution in communities, landfills, and oceans. International Plastic Free Day aims to create awareness of the extent of plastic use in our daily lives and how we can reduce it.
