You wear your Apple Watch every single day on the thin skin of your wrist. You sweat in it, and yes, sometimes you also get allergic reactions to the materials of the wrist band. But have you ever thought that toxic chemicals could be absorbed by your skin?
That’s right, and this is the reason why you should pay attention to the materials of your watch. Plastic free Apple Watch bands and other plastic free accessories do exist! We did the research.
The best plastic-free Apple Watch bands use materials like organic cotton, cork, or stainless steel alloys instead of standard fluoroelastomer plastic, which is the material most Apple Sport Bands are made from. Our top pick for 2026 is Eighty Bands, a GOTS-certified organic cotton band that’s PFAS-free, home-compostable at its end of life, and vegan. It’s compatible with small and large Apple Watch sizes, and fairly priced around US$39. For a fully compostable option, we also recommend the Sea Ranch Jewelry cork watch band; for a budget-friendly, but still “Corporate looking” option, we recommend the Milanese Loop stainless steel style .
Are Smart Fitness Watch Bands Toxic?
Synthetic watch bands have been found to contain fluoroelastomer, which is a material linked to synthetic PFAS “forever chemicals”.
A 2025 study (1) by researchers at the University of Notre Dame, published in the Journal Environmental science & Technology Letters, tested 22 smartwatch and fitness-watch bands and found elevated levels of fluorine and PFAS compounds (such as PFHxA) in synthetic fluoroelastomer bands.
Researchers screened the materials for fluorine, then used chemical extraction and LC-MS/MS analysis to identify and quantify specific PFAS. PFHxA was detected in many of the bands, at concentrations up to 16,662 ng/g. Importantly, this was a product-testing study, so it demonstrated the presence of extractable PFAS in the bands but did not measure whether these chemicals transfer through human skin contact. However, Plastic-Associated Chemicals (PACs), including forever chemicals, can be absorbed through human skin and enter the bloodstream, as demonstrated by a 2024 study (2) led by researchers at the University of Birmingham, and published in the peer revewied journal Environment International. Of 17 commonly used synthetic PFAS compounds tested on 3D lab-grown human skin models, 15 were absorbed through the skin at levels of at least 5% of the applied dose.
Apple Sued over Use of Forever Chemicals in Smart Watches
Following the study mentioned above, a class-action lawsuit (3) was filed against Apple, alleging that the company sold smartwatch bands containing high levels of PFAS or “forever chemicals” in their fluoroelastomer bands while failing to warn consumers, though Apple maintains its products are safe and undergo rigorous testing.

Before we went ahead to scout PFAS-free, non-toxic watch bands, we decided what materials we’d accept when vetting the brands individually. What Makes a Watch Band “Plastic-Free”?
A plastic free watch band is made with the following non-toxic, hypoallergenic skin contact materials that provide globally recognized certifications for textiles made with organic fibers:
- GOTS-certified Organic Cotton
- OEKO-TEX-certified Natural Rubber
- Cork
- Stainless Steel plus Zinc Alloys
- Vegan Leather (not Polyurethane PU though)
- Vegetable-tanned Leather (not cruelty free)
What are the Watch Band Materials to Avoid?
These are all the synthetic watch strap materials we could find when we did our research. We suggest avoiding them.
- Fluoroelastomer
- Nylon (usually woven or braided stretchy nylon)
- Polyester (even recycled polyester PET)
- Faux Leather, also called Vegan PU Leather. PU stands for Polyurethane and it’s toxic plastic.
- TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane)
- “Rubber” (It is could be many materials, usually plastic)
- “Resin” (It’s a nicer word for plastic)
- Silicone, including Magnetic Silicone (It’s not an inert material and cheap silicone contains fillers and other additives. If you decide for this material, ask the manufacturer for product testing and certifications)

Yes watch bands made of cork do exist. This small business imports the cork directly from Portugal to the USA and then individually creates these bands “made to order”. Portuguese cork is sustainably harvested and is a renewable eco-friendly material. It’s also a great vegan alternative to leather jewelry, or other accessories. Be gentle with it. Like leather, cork does not like harsh chemicals or oils. You can wipe your band clean with a cloth dampened with mild soap and water.

FAQ about Non-Toxic Apple Watch Bands
– Are Apple Watch bands made of plastic?
Most standard Apple Watch Sport Bands are made from fluoroelastomer, which is a synthetic rubber-like plastic. Some Apple bands, like Trail Loop and certain Sport Loops, use recycled polyester yarn or nylon, which is still plastic, just recycled. Organic cotton, leather, metal (stainless steel or titanium), and some third-party cork or fabric bands are the main non-plastic options.
– Is silicone technically plastic-free?
Silicone is a synthetic polymer, so it isn’t considered plastic-free in the strictest sense, though it’s chemically distinct from plastics like PVC or fluoroelastomer and is generally safer but not inert. If your goal is specifically avoiding petroleum-based plastic, look for bands made from certified organic cotton, vegan leather (not vegan PU), cork, or metal instead.
– Does Apple sell a PFAS-free band?
Apple has not published PFAS-free claims for its Sport Bands, and independent testing has found PFAS compounds (specifically PFHxA) in some fluoroelastomer bands, including Apple’s. If PFAS exposure is a concern, third-party silicone bands explicitly marketed as PFAS-free, or non-silicone materials like organic cotton, vegan leather or metal, are safer choices. We provided several options in this overview.
– Can plastic-free watch bands be recycled or composted?
It depends on the material. Genuine leather bands can biodegrade but aren’t curbside-recyclable. Undyed organic cotton straps, like the one from Eighty Bands, can be composted. Metal steel bands are recyclable through standard scrap-metal channels. A small number of brands (like Pela) make bands designed to be industrially compostable. Check the brand’s specific end-of-life instructions rather than assuming.
– What’s the most durable non-plastic material for daily wear?
Stainless steel and titanium bands are the most durable non-plastic options and hold up well to sweat and water. Vegetable-tanned leather is durable but not ideal for swimming or heavy sweating and it’s not cruelty free. Cork is lightweight and water-resistant but shows wear faster under heavy daily use. Organic cotton is one of the best options for durable non-plastic watch band materials.
